In the summer of 1990 I traveled with a group of people from around the US to the Tibetan side of Mt. Everest. There we picked up tons of garbage, instituted recycling programs, and helped to set up the first Chinese National Park there.
When I returned I wrote a long article which Boys' Life agreed to publish. They sent me the revised version with my check. I was so upset at the changes they had made that I returned their check with a note saying "I didn't write that article, I don't want the money". (Hey, I was 16 and didn't know any better.)
They replied that I had written at too high a level - they had to re-write for a younger audience, as well as shorten it up. Such is the editorial process (my first lesson!)
After that I kept their check.
